I thought I forgot.
That it had passed me by.
Finally lost forever,
it had let me slip away.
How could I be so naïve,
that it no longer lingered.
Yet, here and now seemed so real.
I settled in so self-assured,
that tossed aside, it no longer cared.
And I moved on, or so I thought,
leaving it far behind,
somewhere, never to be found.
Then, when I least expected,
opening the mirror one day,
there it was in front of me.
Inky black, beady eyes,
starring me in the face.
I opened my mouth to scream,
and it quickly slithered in.
Taking control again, it took its place,
where it now sits inside of me,
curled up in a seamless ball;
not wanting to leave me alone.
I wish it would just move on,
and let me be, like I thought it used to be.
Yes, I thought I had forgot.
